TextArea HTML Editor – tinyMCE smaller brother

By Chris on December 29, 2008

tinyMCE_screen I like using tinyMCE, I really do. But lately they added to many functionalities – too many I can say.

It’s true, you can disable them, but the package is bigger day by day [actually version by version] – for example, now the tinyMCE package has around 2.8 MB – so its pretty big :|

tinyMCE_size

Today I found a simple & clean solution made by Corpocrat. They offer 2 scripts – one for the BBCode [demo] and one for HTML Markup [demo].

The interface and simple & clean:

taeditor-demo

total size is around 5KB and you can do enough with it :)

Features:

  • No iFrames
  • Fast loading and lightweight (code just under 2kb)
  • Works in IE and Firefox
  • No popup html window for inserting hyperlinks.
  • Easy to integrate
  • Images [B / I / U / link / …] can be easily changed
  • Inserts quick html code

I didn’t had time to look at the code, but if it’s simple to extend you can add nice functionalities to it [eg: add a button for inserting YouTube videos]

  1. Tinymce is way too heavy. There are plenty of alternate open source editors and check this out: http://free-php-editor.com. I own corpocrat.com and thanks for mentioning my work.

  2. I’m really glad I found your script pbu :cowboy:

Chris, thanks for pointing out, I’ll spread the words..

…since I thought there are way too many ppl out there looking for small, lightweight, non-extensive txtarea html editor.

    ..anyway, thanx all.
